The first Bay Area Super Bowl was a win for San Francisco

Santa Clara County may be best known as the home of Silicon Valley, but it can now lay claim to being the host of two of California's ten Super Bowls. Super Bowl 19 - the great matchup between ace quarterbacks Joe Montana and Dan Marino took place in 1985 at Stanford Stadium.

The game included future Hall of Famers Montana, coach Bill Walsh, Ronnie Lott and Fred Dean for the 'Niners, and coach Don Shula, Dan Marino and Dwight Stephenson of the Dolphins.

Interestingly, the game was played on the official day of the Presidential Inauguration, but because January 20th fell on a Sunday, President Ronald Reagan was sworn in in a private ceremony at the White House and the public event was held the next day.

For Reagan, the day held two memorable events: his second presidential swearing-in and the honor of being the official coin tosser, a moment which was broadcast live, direct from the White House. It's not known which event loomed larger in the mind of the Gipper.

And just in case football fans have forgotten, the final score was San Francisco 38, the Miami Dolphins 16.
